In 2029, the orbital station `Oberon', which orbits the Earth, is inhabited by a group of scientists. They train apes to replace humans in risky space missions. One of the primates, Pericles, disappears during a test. Captain Leo Davidson goes looking for him, but he loses control of his ship and enters a mysterious magnetic field, then falls unconscious.
