Walter Mitty, a 42-year-old confirmed bachelor with a dreamy temperament, has worked for years for Life magazine. A native of New Jersey, he has fallen in love with his colleague Cheryl, but is unable to speak to her. He is in charge of managing the negatives of the magazine's photographers, including those sent by the famous Sean O'Connell. When the negative of the most important photo of his career is lost, Walter sets out in pursuit of the photographer-adventurer. This journey will take him from New York to Iceland, via the Himalayas and Los Angeles.
