In the 1980s, in Lowell, Massachusetts, amateur boxer Micky Ward has just suffered several defeats and his career seems compromised. While the HBO network is preparing a documentary on his half-brother and trainer Dick Eklund, a former boxer turned junkie, Micky finds love with the waitress Charlene, who will help him free himself from the negative influence of his mother, who clumsily manages his career, and his invasive sisters.
