The Diving Bell and the Butterfly

On December 8, 1995, a sudden stroke plunged Jean-Dominique Bauby, a journalist and father of two, into a deep coma. When he came out of it, all his motor functions had deteriorated. Suffering from what medicine calls locked-in syndrome, he could no longer move, speak or even breathe without assistance. In this inert body, only one eye moved. This eye became his link with the world, with others, with life.
