On the West Side of New York, two gangs clash: the Jets, white Americans led by Riff, and the Sharks, Puerto Rican immigrants led by Bernardo. During a dance, Maria, Bernardo's sister, meets Tony, the former leader of the Jets. As they fall in love, the rivalry between the two clans worsens. Bernardo kills Riff during a fight and dies in turn, stabbed by Tony.
